Curriculum Night Videos

Screen Shot 2019-09-21 at 5.37.10 PMThese videos were put together for a recent Curriculum Night, with live narration for parents during "mini classes." I recorded similar commentary for the videos, so that parents who were not able to make it can take a look, so parents and students can refer to them throughout the School year, and for prospective families considering Whitby to see, as a culmination of Design Skills here in our Middle School.

Take a look to see collaboration within and across subject areas, and how students work together to make challenging and significant connections. Using MYP Design thinking, students ask questions and consider real life applications for each MYP Design Unit.  Watch the videos below, and learn more about our Design program! -Phil Lohmeyer, Whitby Design Teacher

Whitby Design at the Annual "State of the School" Event:

5th Grade Design

In our first unit, students will develop a video series based on specific parameters.  Statement of Inquiry: "Effective Series Program Design design is dependent on audience development and accomplished by creating sustainable content adapted with specific techniques."  Students will then build a miniature set with sourced materials, and end the year with a focus on editing, staging, and b-roll.

6th Grade Design

In our 6th grade Design units, students will develop a brand persona, learn branding strategies and create both analog and digital packaging.  Statement of Inquiry: "A brand visually communicates the identity of a larger entity, using innovations in symbolism to reflect the perspective of the consumer and achieve brand loyalty." Students will create a podcast, commercial, press release, and hold a press conference in collaboration with the Theater Department, and Theater Arts teacher Mrs. Rathus.

7th Grade Design

In 7th grade Design, students study famous comic strip illustrators, and then learn how to create comic strips of their own.  Statement of Inquiry: "Effective Comic Strip Designs exhibit form and organization, often requiring collaboration between specialists, and functioning as scalable, visual solutions to staging challenges."  Students will create a comic strip story, and then animate the story by adding movement with one or more of the following Animation styles: Cutout, Whiteboard, Puppet, Rotoscoping, Multiplane, or Claymation.

8th Grade Design

8th grade Design see students harness their leadership skills, and begin to create for clients within our school.  Students first identify their "uniqueness," by establishing and highlighting specific areas of expertise.  Statement of Inquiry: "In order to understand how time, place, and space allows designers to develop form and function, students will identify an Archetypal Personality that can serve specific needs of our community."  Students will then use these skills in the service of personalities and projects in all areas of our school.

Thanks from Whitby Design!

It's an absolute pleasure to share our Curriculum with parents and others in the Whitby community. As our our Middle School Head Simone Becker told us after a inspiring and impactful Curriculum Night, "The IB approaches to teaching are alive and well and you demonstrated it tonight!" Thanks for taking a look, and remember our credo: Here at Whitby we value "Rock Stars over Robots!"cover_form_a_group_jpg
